I wanna say Rock the Bells was crazy but that would be an understatement. Unfortunately I missed the K'naan and Mickey Factz performance but its all good. After a little bit of tailgating my afternoon started off at the main stage with an ill ass performance by Common. Common went through his list of classics and brought out Talib Kweli which got the crowd hype. Following the Common performance I made my way to the Paid Dues stage where MOP tore the house down. I have never seen MOP in concert but they have the livest energy and got a lot of crowd participation. MOP ended their set with the world renowned hit Ante Up leaving the stage on fire. The in between act Sage Francis had a few fans but everyone was waiting for Slaughterhouse. After Sage Francis did a few too many songs the crowd’s anticipation was growing greater and greater until a check 1 2 from a familiar voice lifted the crowd into a joyous uproar. Followed by the voice were four of the hungriest MC's in hiphop and on came Slaughterehouse. To set it off, they started with their hit Onslaught and the crowd was matching each MC's verse word for word. The DJ could have let the beat rock and the crowd would have performed the whole song without Slaughterhouse there. Followed by Onslaught, the four headedmonster continued to display their lyrical abilities by performing songs such as Fight Club and Woodstock before goin into a mini individual set, where Royce brought out DJ Premiere to perform Boom which sent the crowd into a
frenzy. Joe Budden followed with his biggest song to date Pump It Up. For the Joe Budden fans this is kind of disappointing because he has an arsenal of songs that aren't at all commercial but a good performance none the less. Joell Ortiz and Crooked I concluded the mini set which led to the Slaughterhouse single, The One where they brought the female singer from the chorus out. Finally, they ended their set with acapella verses which satisfied the crowd enough until August 11 or until they drop another song on hiphopdx.com. From the Slaughterhouse performance I made my way back to the main stage where Big Boi was just wrapping up his set. From what I saw he did a good job and had the crowd moving. After waiting a little while for the stage to be set up for the main event, it was finally here and Nas and Damian Marley did not disappoint the screaming fans. After performing a song off their upcoming album, Distant Relatives, Nas went into his collection rocking hit after hit. To the crowd’s pleasure, Nas brought AZ to perform a couple classic songs. What had to be one of the highlights of the day was Nas bringing out Jadakiss to perform. Jadakiss performed a little bit longer than I expected which was a bonus because he brought out Styles P and Sheek Louch. To close out the show, Nas and Damian Marley left the crowd wanting more by performing Road to Zion and one more song off the album. For the song off their album which was the last song of the evening they bought out K'naan who showed why he's a force to be reckoned with. All in all this was a great day for Hip-hop and real music and I will be attending every Rock the Bells from here on in.
